REBEL HORSE RESCUE - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Bio: Miralee Ferrell is the award-winning author of more than a dozen novels. She and her husband live along the Columbia River Gorge in southern Washington State, where she enjoys riding the wooded trails and spending time with her grown children. In addition to horses and dogs, Miralee once owned two cougars.

Welcome back, Miralee. I know you speak at various conferences and meetings. What do you have coming up in 2017?

I’ll be attending a large inter-church two-day retreat where I’ll be sharing briefly then meeting and greeting at a book table. I’ve taken part for the past 4 years and love the ladies there. I may also be on staff again at Oregon Christian Writer’s, although invitations haven’t been sent out yet, as it’s later in the year. I’ve cut back on my speaking and conferences since starting my small publishing company, Mountain Brook Ink. That’s keeping me very busy!

If you were planning a women’s retreat, what would be the theme for it?

Restoration. I’m passionate about that topic. I want to see Christian women healed in every way—spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Who would you want as speakers and why?

I think Beth Moore would be near the top of my list, as this is a subject she understands. I’ve taught several of her Bible studies, and women gain a lot from her teaching.

Where would you hold the retreat and why?

I don’t have a particular spot in mind, but I know exactly what I’d want it to contain. Nearby woods (no cities!) with peaceful walking trails. Outdoor seating with flowers, grass, trees, and water—preferably running water, as the sound is so soothing. The facility needs a spa, a Jacuzzi, lots of room to relax and chat, as well as serving incredible food. I’d want the ladies to be comfortable and feel pampered, so digging deep into their hearts and finding renewal and restoration wouldn’t be a chore.

Do you read print books or ebooks? Or a combination of the two?

A combination. I still love the feel of a print book and prefer it, but it’s so easy to slip my light-weight Kindle into my purse for when I’m waiting somewhere. But actually, most of my reading is now done via audio. I go through 1-2 books a week while driving, doing housework, or working outside.

That’s an interesting title. How did you come up with it?

The featured horse in the story with the mystery surrounding him is a bit wild and unruly—basically, a rebel. And due to circumstances I can’t reveal (without spoilers), he’s in need of rescue. Based on those details, the title came together and fit perfectly.

So what is the book about?

First, Rebel Horse Rescue is book 5 in the Horses and Friends series for middle-grade kids—although I’ve had adults enjoy these books as well, due to the light mystery threads and continuing growth of the characters. Here’s the short summary of this book:

Summer is winding down for Kate and her friends when a surprise visitor appears at her family’s stable—a beautiful bay horse wearing a halter and a bad attitude. Dubbing the horse “Rebel,” the friends set out to find the horse’s owner. Where did he come from, and why are horses all over the area disappearing from their pastures and paddocks? It’s a mystery that even the sheriff can’t figure out, so Kate decides to head up the investigation. When Kate’s autistic brother, Pete, develops a strong connection to the new arrival, Kate wonders—did God bring Rebel to them for a bigger purpose?

I’m going to cheat a little bit and skip forward a couple of pages to where we meet Rebel, since he’s the heart of the story:

Melissa stood and stretched, then stopped, one hand still in the air. “Listen. Did you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Kate scrunched her brows.

“Hoofbeats on the driveway. Are you expecting someone to ride over today to use the arena?”

Kate shook her head. “Nope. Someone could stop by, but most of the people who board their horses here come in a car, or ride a bike, or walk, since their horse is already in the barn. Probably someone riding by.” She smiled. “We do live in horse country, you know.”

A loud nicker outside was answered by two horses in the barn, and Kate swung around to face the outside door. “Better go check it out, though.” Kate was certain it wouldn’t amount to anything. There hadn’t been any excitement around here since the theft of her mom’s antique box containing the money for the trail ride and scavenger hunt. It had been quiet and boring the past couple of weeks.

The group hurried outside with Kate leading the way. She came to a quick halt a few paces from the barn and gasped. “It’s a loose horse with a halter on. And he’s gorgeous!”

Tori came to a sliding stop behind her and bumped her shoulder. “Oops, sorry. Hey, Jake, slow down, or you’re gonna knock us all over.” She shot Jake a smile. “Although I don’t have the right to talk—I ran into Kate.”

Bio: Miralee Ferrell’s debut novel released in the fall of 2007, and eighteen more have followed since. Dear Readers, I’ve loved Miralee’s writing since I read her first book. We’ve become friends, and I’m happy to introduce you to her horse novels for middle-grade kids.

Welcome back, Miralee. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I wear a lot of hats—wife, mom, grandmother, multi-published author of 18 novels and novellas, as well as publisher/acquisitions editor for Mountain Brook Ink. I live in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge in southern Washington State, several miles out in the country. We’ve lived in this area for many years, and it’s where we raised our children. Someday we hope to travel south for the winter and escape the snow and cold, but right now we’re content to burrow in by the woodstove and enjoy life here.                                                                                               How did you become interested in writing?     It’s funny—I was never interested in writing, only in reading. I’ve always been an avid fiction reader, with no desire to write. Then ten years ago, a visiting pastor prayed with me and told me he felt the Lord was calling me to write. After praying and talking to my husband and pastor, I decided I’d follow that direction and see if God blessed it. He has. I now have 18 books in print with more on the way. It’s been an incredible journey with the Lord at the wheel.                              

                       

What compelled you to write a book on this subject?

A good friend and editor who was at Waterbroook at the time, read one of my historical romances set on a horse ranch. She loved it and suggested I consider writing a series of horse novels for kids. I wasn’t excited about it at first, but the idea grew on me. After time, I felt the Lord nudging me that direction. This book is the fourth in the series, and I’ve been having a ball writing these books and inserting subtle life messages into these stories for kids.

What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book? 

There are multiple themes—having adventures with friends, solving a mystery, learning how to work together, and of course, the major theme in all the Horses and Friends books centers around loving and enjoying horses.

Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?

The main thing is trust—learning how to trust God and trust others when things go wrong. Also, not judging other people by outward appearances, as you’ll often get it wrong.

What makes your book different from any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?    

I’ve had a number of readers tell me that my characters are very true to life and the adventures they have are more compelling than a lot of kids’ books they’ve read in the past few years. Plus, I weave life lessons into each story that many parents appreciate.           

                                

How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?

I truly believe He called me to write, or I wouldn’t be doing it. I had no desire to write books, so all the glory goes to Him for what’s happened in my career. My desire is, and always has been, to point other to Jesus. I try to do that in a soft way through my fiction, by encouraging, teaching, and weaving in real issues that people encounter in everyday life, and showing how the characters overcome.
            

Do you have a favorite Scripture verse?

Jeremiah 29:11-12 has been my life verse for years.

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 

12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?

I love horseback riding with my daughter, playing with my little granddaughter when her daddy and mother are able to bring her down, and going for long walks. I’m also the owner and publisher at Mountain Brook Ink, an up-and-coming Christian publishing house for fiction, and that’s cut into my hobby time this last year. But I do still take time to walk, go to lunch, or go riding with my grown daughter who lives nearby, or have an occasional hour or two visit over tea with a friend.

As we close, is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes, I’m thrilled to announce there will be two more books in the Horses and Friends series. The first is titled Rebel Horse Rescue. We’ll be working on the covers in March, and releasing more information with a projected release date (probably around November 1 this year) in another month or two. Book six is called Trouble on the Trail, and it will release next year. I’m thrilled I get to continue with this series, as the characters have become like friends.

MYSTERY RIDER - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Welcome back, Miralee. You have a lot of books out now. What is your favorite setting to use in your books?

I’m a nut for anything horse, farm, or ranch related (which is why you see one of those things in many of my books). I’d have to say any or all of the three are my favorite.

What do you look for when you’re shopping for a book to buy for yourself?

I look for great character development, plot twists that surprise me, and a story that resonates to the point I have a hard time forgetting it—but mostly—a hard time forgetting the characters. They’re even more important to me than the plot. If the plot is strong but the characters are weak or not believable, I might not even finish the book.

I know what you mean. Give us a little tour of the setting for this book.

It’s set in Oregon in the middle of the Columbia River Gorge, not far from the base of Mt. Hood. Truly God’s country! Orchards, hay fields, timber, streams, lakes, mountains, and wonderful trails for horseback riding. I only live about 30 minutes away from where the book is set, and I love it!

What other books do you have coming out soon?

The next release is on Jan. 1, 2016, and it’s book four in the Horses and Friends series, Blue Ribbon Trail Ride, which also has a mystery in it. Kids will love it! Then I’m back to romances, as I’m taking part in three novella collections. Cowboy Brides releases with Barbour spring of 2016, then my company, Mountain Brook Ink, is releasing Heart of a Cowboy (also a historical romance) March 1, as well as In Love and War, a collection of contemporary romances June 1. When those are finished I’ll be back to writing full-length historical romance again. Plenty to do!

I really want to feature those on my blog. Please give us a glimpse inside your home.

Our home is for sale, so I’m not sure how long this will be factual, but it’s a 4300 square feet custom built, two-story home on 11.5 acres in the country, with a number of flower beds, lots of grass, a huge garden area, and a small, spring-fed pond. We’ve decided to downsize to get ready for retirement for my husband, and I’m looking forward to the next adventure!

Is this novel part of a series or a stand-alone book?

It’s a four-book series, and this is #3.

Tell us about the story.

The entire series follows three kids, Kate, her best friend Tori, and their friend Colt, as they tackle horse problems, solve mysteries, have adventures together, and learn great life-lessons. This particular story has a mystery thread as the kids try to figure out who the mystery rider is that goes past Kate’s house at dusk on a black horse, with the rider cloaked in a long duster and hood. They also contend with an uneasy relationship with Melissa, a girl who gave them some grief in the second book and appears to be trying to be their friend, but they’re not sure they can trust her. I think kids who read the first two will enjoy getting back into the world of Horses and Friends!

Summer, Present Day

Kate Ferris sprawled on the grass next to the newly painted paddock fence on her parents’ farm. “Thanks for your help, guys. It sure goes faster with more than one person working.” She shot a sideways glance at Melissa Tolbert, still barely able to believe the girl who had always been so unfriendly at school had shown up and offered to help. “You’re not bad at slapping on paint.”

Melissa leaned back on her elbows and grinned. “Even if Colt didn’t keep his word to not splatter me with it.”

Red-headed, freckled Colt Turner removed a long piece of straw from between his lips. “Hey, you said not to make you look like the rest of us, but I didn’t make any promises.”

Tori Velasquez, Kate’s best friend, rolled her eyes. “We should get the brushes cleaned and the rest of the paint closed up and put away before you two start fighting again.”

“Not fighting.” Melissa arched one golden brow. “Just discussing.”

SILVER SPURS - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Welcome back, Miralee. You have a lot of books out now. What is your favorite setting to use in your books?

For my historical romances, I love any setting in the Old West, especially the states where cowboys, ranches, and outlaws could be found. But for my middle-grade contemporary horse novels, I love setting those close to where I live, as I know the area so well and have ridden my horse here for years.

What do you look for when you’re shopping for a book to buy for yourself?

I have a wide variety of interests. Right now I’m hooked on fantasy and other speculative fiction. Other times I’m hungry for a good suspense or mystery, while at others I’m in the mood for historical romance that contains action, adventure, and anything Old West!

Give us a little tour of the setting for this book.

It’s set in a very small rural town in Oregon, only an hour or less from Mt. Hood, and about ten minutes or so from the Columbia River Gorge. There are a lot of horses, orchards, hay fields and pasture, and a saw mill. Lots of green, snow in the winter, and it’s become more and more of a tourist area due to the beautiful setting and variety of things to do.

What other books do you have coming out soon?

There will be two more books in the Horses and Friends series, with the final one releasing in February, 2016. I also have two different novellas that are part of historical romance collections. Summertime Brides is the first collection, and my book is The Dogwood Bride, and the other book is part of Cowboy Brides, and my title is Love’s Sweet Storm, set in Colorado.

Please give us a glimpse inside your home.

Our home is located nine miles from a small town, across the Columbia River that separates Washington (our town) from Oregon. We own eleven acres, a two story house and garage, and a VERY large yard and garden area. I love all the flowers and grass, but it’s it takes a lot of time to keep up. I’ve planted delphinium, dozens of day lilies, roses, Canterbury bells, peonies, and many other flowers … not to mention blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.

Is this novel part of a series or a stand-alone book?

Silver Spurs is the second book in the series, and the books follow the same kids and their adventures.

Tell us about the story.

Kate’s dream of owning a horse has finally happened. But now her best friend Tori has no money to buy a horse. So Kate comes up with a plan—she’ll raise money by boarding horses and hosting a show in her family’s barn.

It seems the perfect solution until Melissa, the girl who disses Kate and Tori at school, shows up to board her horse, determined to compete in their show and win the silver spurs. Will their plan be ruined—or does God have something better in store for them all?

Silver Spurs is a tale of overcoming fears and trusting God with your dreams.

Kate Ferris hauled back on the reins and brought her Thoroughbred mare to a stop. Her arms ached with the effort. Capri was a lot of horse to keep under control.

The mare tossed her head, and froth flew from her mouth. Kate patted the mare’s neck, her palms sweaty against the dark-red coat. “Easy, girl. Settle down. It’s okay.” It’s really not okay. Kate frowned, hoping her voice didn’t show her frustration. Determination pushed her forward. No way could she quit and let Capri win this battle. Kate hadn’t learned as much as she’d liked in the few lessons she’d taken while working at the English-riding barn a couple of miles from home, but she knew she shouldn’t reward Capri by dismounting when the mare wasn’t responding to her cues.

The chestnut horse threw her head again and pranced in place.

Kate gave an exasperated sigh. “All right, let’s try it again. Slower this time.” She nudged her mount into a trot along the rail of the outdoor arena, trying to focus on rising and falling to the beat of the Thoroughbred’s long stride. Getting the hang of posting hadn’t been easy, but Kate finally had it mastered. At least she hoped she’d mastered it.

A HORSE FOR KATE - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Welcome back, Miralee. How did this book come about?

A few years ago I attended a writers’ conference and met Alice Crider, an editor at a major publishing house. She asked what I wrote, and I told her my newest book, Love Finds You in Last Chance, California, had released earlier that year. She said she’d spotted it in the conference bookstore and planned to buy a copy, as the cover intrigued her. As we chatted, I discovered we shared a love of horses and riding, and I felt as though I’d found a new friend.

Sometime after the conference, I received an email from Alice saying she’d read my book and loved it. She suggested I consider writing a series of horse novels for girls, as so many young girls have always dreamed of owning a horse. I thanked her and said I’d think about it but tucked it back on a mental shelf. I had already made a change from writing women’s contemporary fiction to historical romance and wasn’t sure my career would be improved by adding another genre.

Several months later, during a Wednesday-night service at church, our pastor challenged us to pray about the direction our lives were headed and to ask God if there was anything He wanted us to change. I did, and I was surprised at the answer. I felt strongly that He was directing me to write the girls’ horse novels Alice had suggested.

Tell us about the book’s cover and what makes it unique.

I had a clear picture of the covers for all four of the books in this series, and I knew the first one had to include Kate and her best friend Tori, along with a horse. Since horses and friendship are a part of each story, it was important to me that both be depicted on every cover. I’ve been extremely pleased with how the graphic designer has brought each of my concepts to life with the gorgeous covers he’s created. Book two and three are even better, and I can’t wait to share them as well.

I want to feature all of them on my blog. Please explain and differentiate between what’s fact and fiction in the book.

Most of the book is fiction, other than the setting and the horse details. I’ve ridden for over 40 years and raised a horse-crazy daughter who took lessons growing up, so I’m very familiar with the equine world. I wove as much horse adventure into the book as I could, and placed the story in Odell, Oregon, a farming and orchard community across the Columbia River from my home, and nestled at the base of Mt. Hood.

How much research did you have to do for this book?

Not much. Because I live near Odell, and my daughter took lessons at a large barn in that area, I had a clear picture in my mind of what I wanted to depict. I’m also very familiar with both Western and English riding, so there was little research required. The only area I researched was the subject of autism. I’ve been around a number of autistic adults and children at church, as well as children of friends, but I went a little deeper by asking questions of a woman I know who is helping to raise her autistic grandson—a boy the same age as Pete—the autistic child in my story.

What inspired and surprised you while you were writing the book?

Two things: I hadn’t planned much for Pete, Kate’s autistic little brother—he was going to be more of a background figure when I started, but he evolved into much more than that. I’ve had two advance readers already state he’s their favorite character, although I never intended to have him in the spotlight. The other factor was the friendship that developed between the three main kids, Kate, Tori, and Colt, who are very different in their own way. I’ve gotten to know and love these kids, and I didn’t expect to make such an emotional connection with them.

I love it when that happens with my characters. What do you hope the reader takes away from the story?

My readers for this book are children ages 8-13, a bit different from the norm for my work. I’d have to say I hope they attain a better understanding of friendship and forgiveness, as well as gaining the ability to see handicaps and disappointments in a new light.

What is the next project you’re working on?

It’s actually book three and four in this series, Mystery Rider and Blue Ribbon Trail Ride. I just finished proofreading book two, Silver Spurs, which releases in three short months on June 1, and today I’m starting copy edits for book three, Mystery Rider, and in a few days, I’ll be working on the full edit for book four, Blue Ribbon Trail Ride. Then I plan to return to historical romance with a novella currently under contract with Barbour … beyond that, another three-book trade series set in the Old West.

What do you do when you have to get away from the story for a while?

Something that ties in quite well with the story line in this series—I go horseback riding with my daughter. I lost my Arabian mare a little over a year ago to old age, but I ride my son-in-law’s mare now, and my daughter and I enjoy many wonderful hours on the trails, spring through fall.

This was the absolute worst day of Kate Ferris’s life. Ever. She hunkered deeper into the back seat of her family’s Subaru Outback and glared out the window at the passing scenery. Why did God allow her dad to lose his job in Spokane? And, even more important, why hadn’t He answered her prayer about staying in the only home she’d known all her life? She dreaded trying to make new friends in this strange place. Staying at home with her dog and her family was so much easier.

Her seven-year-old brother sat up and thumped on the window. “Horses, Kate. Look.” The words were flat and expressionless, but Peter emphasized each one with another tap on the window.

Kate removed her ear buds and peered where he pointed. “Cool.” A pasture extended from the two-lane road and off toward the looming snow-capped Mt. Hood. “How many do you see?”

“Eleven.” He pressed his nose tight against the glass. “Four more. Look.”

Kate grinned, amazed once again at his ability with numbers. His autism kept him from communicating in other ways, but ask how many of something he saw and he got it right every time. “What colors are they?”

Peter hunched down deeper, and the humming started again.

Kate’s mother draped her arm across the edge of the front seat and glanced back. “How

many brown ones, Pete?”

“Six.” He kept his face toward the road and gently rocked in time to the tune.

Dad smiled at Kate’s mom. “Don’t worry, Nan. He’s going to be happier once he’s out in the country. It’ll be so much better than being cooped up in that apartment.”

Kate reached over the back seat and stroked the coat of their German shepherd. The dog licked her hand as though sensing her distress. “Rufus will be happy too.” Everyone will be happy but me. “It feels like we’ve been in this car for days.”

Her dad laughed. “It’s only been six hours since we left, Kate. We’ll be home in another five minutes.”

DREAMING ON DAISIES - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Welcome back, Miralee. Since you’re being published regularly, what new avenues will your future books take?

I’m actually trying something new starting in the spring….I should say, two new ventures. The first is a middle-grade girls’ horse series of four books with David C Cook. A Horse for Kate (book 1 in the Horses and Friends series) releases March 1, with each successive book releasing in four month intervals. I’m really excited about this series, as I’m using a group of three friends, two girls and a boy, who have adventures, solve a mystery, and take part in various horse activities. Parents will appreciate the wholesome family values woven in as well. Then I’m branching out to try independent publishing. I’ve had one book release already, Forget Me Not, a novella that is tied to my current traditionally published Love Blossoms in Oregon series. There may be one more in that series to tie up a few little details if I have time, as well as a full set of three historical romance (western) books following.

What conferences will you be attending this year? Will you be a speaker at any of them?      

I decided not to attend any conferences this year and chose to take part in two smaller writers’ retreats instead. I felt the need for less teaching and more interaction with other published authors, where I could brainstorm, pray, talk, laugh, and rest. It was a wise decision for me, and I’ll jump back into the conference scene in the spring, possibly at Mt. Hermon in California.

If you were in charge of planning the panel discussion at a writing conference, what topic would the panel cover, and who would you ask to be on the panel, and why?

I think it would be about the changing face of the publishing industry and where it’s headed for authors and publishers—especially as indie (or independent) publishing among traditionally published authors seems to be truly taking hold and become more and more accepted. I’d ask James Bell, Randy Ingermannson, Angela Hunt for starters, but there are a number of others who are not only self-publishing but getting into cover design (like Angie) who bring more than one talent to the mix.

How important is it to you to be active in writing organizations?

It was vital when I started my career, and while I’m still involved, I don’t have as much time to interact as I once did. My focus has shifted more to targeting specific areas of learning as well as helping newer writers who need encouragement or support. I’m a member of several organizations and have grown as a result.      

Where in the community or your church do you volunteer?

I volunteered for the past 20 years in our church as a lay counselor ministering to women. I’m taking a break this year and focusing on my writing, but I do plan to return to that ministry when the Lord releases me to do so.   

 Who are the five people who have made the most impact on your life, and how?        

My mom, who has always been one of my best friends and confidant, my daughter who is the same….they’ve both laughed and cried with me, and shared many wonderful memories…. the same with my son and my husband. All of these people have supported me emotionally and spiritually with encouragement and love. The last is my friend Shannon, who always wants to know what she can pray for in my life. We share equally in the time we talk about ourselves, and try to give equally to the other—a true friendship, and something I don’t have with everyone. She’s been such a blessing in my life.

If you could write the inscription on your tombstone, what would it be?           

She was obedient to God’s calling.

Tell us about the featured book.     

This is book 3 in the Love Blossoms in Oregon series. All of the others were set mostly in the boardinghouse owned by Katherine Galloway and her two young daughters. This one follows all the same characters as the first three books, but the setting a ranch on the outside of Baker City, Oregon, but with a number of scenes still taking place in the boardinghouse.

When her father's debts, brought on by heavy drinking, threaten Leah Carlson's family ranch, she fights to save it. When handsome banker Steven Harding must decline her loan request, he determines to do what he can to help. Just as he arrives to serve as a much-needed ranch hand, Leah's family secrets—and the pain of her past—come to a head. They could destroy everything she's fought for. One mile outside Baker City, Oregon

Mid-March 1881

Leah Carlson kicked a wicker chair out of her way and stormed off the porch, angrier than she’d been in years. Well, years might be a stretch, but at least weeks. Or perhaps several days. Maybe riding to town and finding Pa would be a good idea.

She glared at the ground, her mood not improved by the thick mud clinging to the bottom of her boots, and scraped it off on a horseshoe nailed to the bottom step. March—her least favorite month—always felt somewhere between winter and spring, with none of the benefits of either.

She trooped up the steps and righted the chair. Not the chair’s fault Pa had gotten drunk again and stayed all night in town. Buddy, their aging ranch hand, had seen Pa go into the saloon when Buddy had headed home from the mercantile last night. At first he hadn’t told her in hopes that his boss would return at a decent hour, but that hadn’t happened.

Leah wrapped her coat closer around her shoulders. Now most of the chores would fall on her, Buddy, and Buddy’s wife, Millie. With Buddy’s back giving him fits, she couldn’t ask him to do the heavy work, although his pride would force him to try. Why did Pa keep falling off the wagon whenever hope set in that he’d finally beat that horrible habit?

Empty promises, that’s all she’d ever gotten. Promises he’d change. Promises he’d do better. Promises he’d broken ever since Ma died nine years ago. And lately it had only gotten worse. Leah had gone from a child at the tender age of fourteen to a caretaker and ranch foreman almost overnight, and to this day she still felt robbed.

WISHING ON BUTTERCUPS - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Readers, I Miralee Ferrell's books. I am so sorry for being so late posting this interview. My husband and I have been very sick today. This is the first time I've felt like sitting up today.

Welcome back, Miralee. As an author, I know it takes a lot of people to birth each book. Who were the people involved in the birthing of this book, and what were their contributions?

Oh, my … that’s a long list. First and foremost, my family and friends who have encouraged and prayed for me as I write each book. Then all the people at David C Cook, from the acquisitions editor, to the proofreaders to the graphics designers, marketing department and more—it’s amazing how many people it takes to bring a book to press. My small critique group is comprised of three other authors, Vickie McDonough, Margaret Daley, and Kimberly Johnson, who each help strengthen my books with their suggestions. Then of course, there’s my advance readers (too many to mention, but I thank them all!), my agent, who represents me on each contract, my Street Team (brand new with this book), my publicist and influencers, who each help spread the word prior to and after the release. I’m sure I’ve forgotten more than one person, and I hope they’ll forgive me!

If you teach or speak. What’s coming up on your calendar?

Yes, I do, occasionally, and I’d like to do even a bit more, if the Lord opens the door. I’ll be speaking briefly at a women’s conference in Battleground, WA, sometime in April, and signing books and teaching a workshop at the Oregon Christian Writer’s conference Feb. 22 in Salem, Oregon.

If you had to completely start over in another place, where would you move, and why?

Somewhere that probably doesn’t exist, LOL! I want mild to warm weather in the winter, with no snow, but I still want the lush greenery we have here in the Pacific NW, plenty of water, along with sunny, warm weather in the spring, summer and fall. But if I had to pick and had unlimited money, and I could move all my extended family with me, I think somewhere in Colorado or Wyoming—ranch country, but surrounded by high mountains, and I’d live in the middle of about a thousand acres for the privacy, but still within no more than an hour’s drive from decent shopping. Anyone know if that actually exists? If not, I’m VERY happy right where I am!

If you could only tell aspiring novelists one thing, what would it be?

Be willing to take advice—if you don’t have a thick skin and aren’t willing to change, learn and grow, you won’t succeed in this business. It’s truly imperative that an aspiring novelist is willing to listen to others where their work is concerned. When we started, we all thought that what we’d written was brilliant, and we didn’t want to cut or change a thing. Then we learned that we knew very little and that most of it needed work. That’s a hard lesson, but one that will take you far if you’ll embrace it.                       

You’ve been asked to be in charge of a celebrity cruise. Who would you ask to take part, and why? (AS in what program, singers, etc. [it doesn’t have to be writing related])

Oh, fun!! First of all, I’d invite Christian singer Chris Tomlin to put on a concert, along with Third Day, as I enjoy them both, then I’d ask K-Love to keep the music going throughout the cruise. I’d like to have a variety of inspirational speakers, from ones who would challenge our faith like Beth Moore, to ones who challenge with humor like Patsy Clairmont.

Late August, 1880

Beth Roberts willed her hands to stop shaking as they gripped the cream-colored envelope. She hadn’t heard from her magazine editor in months and had about given up.

Stepping toward a corner, Beth licked her dry lips. Dare she open it here? No one lingered in the lobby of the small post office tucked into the corner of the general store, and the clerk was working on the far side of the alcove stuffing mail into the slots. Glancing out the window at the bustling street of the small city that became her home a few months ago, she scrubbed at the fabric covering her arm and wished her scars hadn’t chosen this moment to itch. Only a handful of people knew her, so she shouldn’t fear discovery.

Beth sucked in a quick breath and slid her finger under the flap.

A folded page fluttered to the floor, opening as it landed. Her heart rate increased as a second piece of paper, long and slender, drifted several feet across the hardwood. They’d sent her another check. Seconds passed while she stood frozen, unable to take in the renewal of her dream. She stepped forward, then crouched low to pick up her treasure.

Masculine fingers gripped the end of the check before she could snatch it up. Beth found herself staring into the twinkling brown eyes of Jeffery Tucker, a fellow boarder at Mrs. Jacobs’s home. She bit back a gasp, fumbled for the nearby letter, and plucked it off the floor, praying he wouldn’t ask questions.

BLOWING ON DANDELIONS - Miralee Ferrell - One Free Book

Miralee Ferrell is a dear writing friend of mine. She allowed me the privilege to read Blowing on Dandelions for an endorsement, which you can read at the front of the book. My last four books are romances with strong issues like those found in women's fiction. So do Miralee's books. These characters will reach out and grip you so hard, you'll have trouble putting this book down.

Welcome, Miralee. Why did you become an author?

I know a lot of people talk about God nudging them to write, but that truly happened to me. I had no desire to write (other than personal memories/journals/letters). I was visiting a neighboring church to hear a special speaker. At the end of the service I responded to a call for prayer. The pastor/speaker prayed with me and stopped after a few moments. He shared that he felt God was saying that I should be writing … he didn’t know whether fiction or non-fiction, but that it was important it be published. I took that word home, prayed about it and counseled with my pastor, husband, and mother, who all urged me to take it seriously. Two-and-a-half years later (after 3 magazine articles were published) my first book, The Other Daughter, released. Since then I’ve had 7 books published and 6 more are under contract.

I had a book published with the title, The Other Brother. I remember hearing your title and knowing that I had to read it. It was wonderful, as are all of your books. If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?

Nothing!! Seriously, if I weren’t writing I’d spend as much time as I could with my grown kids, my mother, my new (2 month old) grandbaby, and my friends. At times I feel as though I shortchange them, although I do put family first 90% of the time and still manage to make my deadlines. But if I had to chose an actual paying job? It would be a Christian counselor with a doctorate. I’m a certified Christian counselor with the American Association of Christian Counselors now, but I wish I’d finished my degree and taken it to the next level. Although if I had, I doubt I’d have started writing, so God knew what He was doing from the beginning.

I’m sure all it took to gain that certification helps you as an author. Your characters are memorable. If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?

That’s easy, the Old West during the 1870s to the late 1890s, and I would have lived on a working cattle/horse ranch. I’d be riding the ranges instead of working in the house or kitchen, if at all possible. Or at least, I would have been in my teens through my thirties. I suppose by now I’d be on a porch swing playing with my grandbabies!

What place in the United States have you not visited that you would like to?

I’ve never visited the Northeastern Seaboard, or any of the northeastern part of the United States. The richness of our country’s history in those places fascinates me, and I’d love to spend a few weeks browsing the museums as well as many of the sites of the Civil and Revolutionary War.     

How about a foreign country you hope to visit?

That’s a little harder, as I have several, but definitely somewhere with castles and lots of history. Maybe Switzerland or Germany or Scotland, I’m not sure. I would love to spend days poking around historical sites that are a few hundred years old!

What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?

To trust Him, completely and totally, no matter what the circumstances look like. His word is true no matter what’s going on in my life and no matter how difficult the challenges.

Blowing on Dandelions is a historical romance with a strong women’s fiction thread set in Baker City, Oregon, in 1880. It’s the first in a three-book series, and the reader will continue to see many of the same character in the ensuing books, although each book can stand alone (although there are ties and references to the previous books). Here’s a little bit about the story.

Do Dandelion Wishes Actually Come True?

Katherine Galloway knew this moment of calm wouldn’t last, blown away like the dandelion seeds she scattered as a girl. In 1880, three years after her husband’s death, she struggles to run an Oregon boardinghouse and raise two girls alone. Things don't get easier when her critical, domineering mother moves in. Katherine must make the situation work, but standing up for herself and her family while honoring her mother isn't easy. And with a daughter entering the teenage years, the pressure on Katherine becomes close to overwhelming. Then she crosses paths with Micah Jacobs, a widower who could reignite her heart, but she fears a relationship with him might send things over the edge. She must find the strength, wisdom, hope, and faith to remake her life, for everything is about to change.

            This is the opening scene and not quite the full page, but I’d hate to leave your readers dangling in the middle of the next scene, so I’ll only share this little bit.

Baker City, Oregon

Late May 1880

Katherine Galloway’s soft exhale sent the dandelion fluff dancing on the warm current of air, but it didn’t bring the anticipated relief. Gripping the stem, she sat in the grassy field with her eyes closed and waited. Why didn’t it come? It had always appeared years ago when she needed it. How long had it been since her mind had drifted away to a place where nothing could hurt her? Fifteen years? Twenty?

She shook her head, and an errant curl tickled her cheek.

More. Many more. But always her memory returned to those times when the dandelion fluff had carried her away to a place where mothers were loving and kind, and little girls didn’t need to be afraid of cutting words or sharp voices.

Had she ever known a time like that, other than in her dreams? Katherine had thought she did, but now she knew: It was all an illusion, like the sunbeams glinting off the bits of white settling to the ground. Seeds—that’s all they were. Seeds that brought unwanted weeds when they matured. Just like her life.

Unwanted. Unwelcome. Unsung.

At least by the one person who had mattered the most while she was growing up.

Katherine pushed to her feet, letting the dandelion stem dangle from her fingers. There was no fantasy world where thirty-two-year-old women—or little girls for that matter—could ride the dandelion fluff and become someone they weren’t. No. It was time to put the past behind her. Mama was coming to stay at her house tomorrow, and somehow Katherine had to survive.
