Why did you become an author?
I don’t think I “became” an author because I was always writing down stories for my mother even though they were just scribbles. I never really thought about it until my freshman year in college when I decided to write a novel. My English professor said I had talent and should use it. It took a long time to get from there to where I am today…58 years…but it was worth it.
If you weren’t an author, what would be your dream job?
My dream job would be as a professor of English at my Alma Mater,
. I started working on my PHD
in Education and English, but dropped it when I retired from teaching. Baylor University
If you could have lived at another time in history, what would it be and why?
I would want to live sometime in the 1880’s at the time my grandparents were born. Of course the conveniences we have today wouldn’t be there, but if I didn’t know they existed, how could I miss them? I write about that time frame because I love it so much.
What place in the
have you not visited
that you would like to? United States
I haven’t been to
or . I
would like to see the Nevada Grand Canyon before I’m
too old to enjoy it…whenever that would be.
How about a foreign country you hope to visit?
I’d like to go back to
I loved being in the Alpine country and visiting places were Mozart composed
music and performed. I sang with our choir in the Mozartaum in Strasburg, and
it was one of the most thrilling experiences I’ve ever had. Switzerland
That sounds exciting. What lesson has the Lord taught you recently?
Patience will produce results. I don’t like to wait a long time for anything, but the Lord has taught me to wait and not question His plans.
I think all authors are learning that all the time. Tell us about the featured book.
Winter Promise is a story of how God works out our lives according to His plan and not ours. My hero thought he had his life all set, but tragedy struck and He lost his faith in both God and himself. Saving the life of a baby at birth and the love of a Christian woman bring him back to both.
I love your cover. Please give us the first page of the book.
“Know ye that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”
Psalm 100:3 KJV
“Porterfield, next stop in ten minutes.” The conductor’s announcement sent the butterflies to dancing again in Abigail Monroe’s stomach. Ever since they entered the state of
, her mind had
flitted from one thing to the next in a series of images that blurred one into
the other. What she remembered from her visit last spring had been enough to
give her the desire to return as a permanent resident. Texas
All around her passengers began gathering their belongings and preparing to leave the train. Mrs. Mabel Newton, who had accompanied her on the trip, adjusted her hat and picked up her handbag. “Well, your adventure will begin shortly.”
Abigail grinned at the elderly woman. If it had not been for Rachel’s aunt’s desire to come west to visit her daughter, this trip may have been delayed indefinitely. “Thank you so much for coming with me, Aunt Mabel. You know how Father worried and didn’t want me to travel alone.”Abigail had fallen into calling the woman “Aunt Mabel” due to her close friendship with Rachel.
“And well he should have been. It isn’t safe for a young woman of your standing to be crossing the country by train without an escort.” She tilted her head toward Abigail, and the feathers on the black hat covering her gray hair quivered with the movement.
Abigail’s parents had at first refused to even consider such a move for their only daughter, but as they began to realize that she was almost twenty-two years of age, their objections lessened.
